Side by side S16MM VS Digital Keylight

It had been a while since I first thought about shooting some sort of comparison keylight between film and digital. The main goal was to use it as a reference to create a LUT with a dynamic range similar to the one of the film stock I’m using. I would then be able to bring a small digital camera on set, with the Lut we made, to use as a reference and a guide, on celluloid shoots, or on location scouting, or to present the director a more accurate projection of what the processed image will look like after dev and scan.

And more globally, just use this Keylight as a reminder of how over and under exposure looks like on a given film stock. In this case, it was Kodak’s 200T 7213 going thru a 416, with a Zeiss Ultra16 12MM and a Red Komodo X, with the same lens and same camera settings (almost, the shutter is ASA are 1/4 of a stop more sensitive on the Red. Tests conducted at RVZ Paris in June 2024 with the help of Clémence Pittiloen and Anaïs Andreassian

PS: Feel free to contact me if you want access to the original Keylight.

Phantom Highspeed Tests

This was my first project including Highspeed photography. The scene we had to shoot in HS was a topshot of an actor falling into the dark. I spent a full day of prep at the rental house with my first AC, weeks before the shoot, to determine the amount of light I would need, the height of the fall, the frequency we would shoot at, given that the fall had to last for 60 seconds.

Final shot: 2500fps-4.5meters high- 2x 24Kw Tungsten Fresnels through a 12x12 1/4 grid cloth butterfly, 2x Spacelights 6Kw and a 5Kw as backlight.

T-rex Underwater Tests

S16 Aaton Xtera with PsTechnics Underwater Borescope tests for a short film in July 2020. After testing, we realized it wasn’t the right tool for the specific shot we wanted.

Testing and chosing lenses-filters combo for Kobo’s MV.

When a director asks for a visual style that I have not experienced before, I go to one of my favorite rental house and try out different sensors, lenses and filters to find my perfect combo. Here are some reports of my last research.
